OK this is a bit of a daft question for you guys but I'm a newbie. I must have done something during a tutorial but my document is behaving oddly now.

I've created a 38px x 38px Document to create a pattern for a web background, and when I zoom right in, instead of zooming into a big pixel grid of 38 x 38 the grid is expanding. So as I zoom in, I just get a transparency grid of the same size squares, increasing in numbers.

I then tried to use the line tool and it's a faded line. It's like it's trying to dither it.

It's obviously somewhere that I've zigged when I should have zagged and changed something in the process but for the life of me can't find it.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Have you figured this out? Because for the life of me, I have no idea what you are describing. We're visual artists! Well, I hope you've gotten your answer by now, but if not, post some screen captures with explanatory captions!

Pictures sometimes say it better than any word typed or spoke.

Hey guys thanks for the reply. Yep point taken so here goes. Let me remind you I am a newbie so brace yourselves for a daft question.

When trying to create an intricate patter, say for a web background I create a small (say 15px x 15px document).

I thought when you zoom into that, the transparency grid would stay at 15 x 15 so I can block edit with say the pencil tool. But been doing a few photography related tutorials from Chris Orwig and Deke McClelland and I think Ive chanced a setting somewhere because now the transparency grid stays the same size, and I just get more squares.

And if I turn on the pixel grid, you just get these little white lines, that are fine, but I'm sure I remember it differently. I seem to remember the actual Transparency checker board (is that what you called it) would only go as far as the number of pixels, which when you zoom in to make intricate patterns made life very easy.

Of course I could be going nuts.

Thanks again for looking and replying.

the transparency grid changes to show increase in zoom size but the white grid like lines you see are your pixels. just star using the pencil and you will see where your pixels are. hope this helps.

There is a pole dancing mugwie in the house, i guarantee it.

That checker pattern will always look the same at any zoom size, it's just there to remind you you have a transparent background.
Like AbdulW87 said start creating your document, and the zoom will work as expected.
