Hi Yall :)

Im trying to duplicate this photo with another and i cant seem to figure out how to duplicate the pink/purlpe dot effect that shows most through out the face portion of the photo.

I have tried most things but kinda closest was HARD MIX layer mode on a desatureted copy of the portrait photo with the bakground "pitched horizontal lines" bleeding through. But it didnt come close anyway..

PLease any suggestions on how to recreate it would be appreciated :)

IMHO, I think that effect makes the kid look like she has a dermatological problem -- not at all flattering -- but if you really want to / need to do this, I would simply set up a brush and use a Wacom (or equivalent) tablet with pressure sensitivity or some random dynamics to apply it just the same way you would if you were putting dots on a physical piece of paper using a ball point pen.

PS - My curiosity is now really raised: If I may ask, why do you want to apply such dots? Is it for purely artistic reasons or perhaps for some medical illustration?

Hahaha no no nothing that mysterious at all :), Im in a PS art class where we are learning techniques to replicate different print/web drawings/photos by ourselfs. And this one is giving me a real headache. Ive done two of the three assignments and this is the last one and im not getting anywhere at all. Ive gotten the new portrait photo close enough to this one but i lack the dots. I do agree they look horrible but thats not the point. I need to be able to explain how i figured out where they come from and how i added them. Simply drawing them with a brush will not give me any extra credit hahaha.

As I deduct the background mesh pattern (the kinda horizontal ones) is bleeding through the face. Darker areas more, and lighter less and then some how the mesh is burn up along the lines to create somwhat dottish points and then just colorized.

But how to get there.....hmmmmm

thx in advance :)

Ahh... now I understand. Thanks. I'm glad you were not being asked to illustrate the advance of the newly emerging, terrible "black dot disease" for a medical journal.

Let me think about how to do it without the obvious method of using a brush.

I'm leaning towards an analogous method to the method sometimes used to make raindrops. Maybe start by putting random black and white shot noise on a separate layer above the image, threshold it to get roughly the correct number / density of dots, shape blur the result with a star shape, and then use that as a mask for a layer that contains a suitable texture and color. Unfortunately, I have no time at the moment to play with it myself, otherwise I would. It sounds like an interesting exercise.

Cheers,

Tom
