I would like to learn how to do this...

I can see that in these composite manipulations that elements of an image are selected and pasted, I can see in some images a textured overlay is used and some burning and dodging might be used, this I understand.
What I need to learn is the small things. The ambience, the atmospherics, the ethereal, the fog that adds depth, the shadowing, the blending of elements together seemlessly. I want to learn how to do these surreal minimal landscapes in this style. I have tried but it just looks rubbish.
Can you help me find a tutorial or make a tutorial? I think I need a step by step lesson.
