Photoshop selections

Magnetic lasso tool followed by lasso tool (to clean up imperfections)... followed by contract by 1px, feather by 1px

Great for selecting an object out of the background :)

yup even though Fluid Mask pretends to be the best selection tool for complex selection I think if you just spend half an hour on any image in quick mask mode you can come up with an amazing result.

Can I step into a quadrangle on the pen tool method?

The other tool I use for real quick, less critical selections is the so named, quick select. There are lots of things it can't do and I always have to zoom in really close and clean up edges with the quick select or a lasso or pen tool anyway. Then I apply a refine edge or refine mask to smooth and possibly shift edge, etc. But for quick and dirty, it's still not bad. I never use the wand tool. I may use the polygonal lasso for quick straight line selections or cleanup.
