Can any suggest a top notch Photoshop mag? Specifically I'm looking for one that is more oriented on design ........sorry I was distracted by the really hot blonde at work...... Anyway yes, design oriented with lots of real world input and practical articles on real world applications. I use photoshop daily at work and have figured that I'm simply not good enough for having used photoshop for 8 years (6 professionaly). I need an edge and a stimulate. Have we started graphic challenges here yet? Or am I that out of the loop.
Feeling a little flat with life,
Lompoc42

p.s. Question for the freelancers out there. How did you get a clientele base and become able enough to sustain yourselves? Office life is not for me. Help...

NAPP (national association of photoshop professionals) puts out photoshop user its ok not too much design stuff really mainly tips on using photoshop and stuff like that. (can't get a subscription though you have to join napp to get the magazine in the mail)

Print is a nice magazine focuses more on design than photoshop

Computer Arts is ok

check out the bookstore's magazine section the art and computer sections have a few more.

Yeah I've seen the NAAP website and PRINT magazine. I'm hoping those aren't my only two options. NAAP isn't bad but I guess I just want more! :D Oh well. The thing is that the NAAP is pretty expensive and it doesn't seem worth it to me. Maybe I'm wrong? [honesty] Someone please let me know :bustagut: :bustagut: B7

I joined NAPP and the website has forums that are pretty informative and they have good tutorials and stuff I haven't really taken advantage of many of the discounts though.

and there are more I can't remember all the names of the ones I've checked out.. there are some that focus more on macs others that focus on design more and don't matter which platform you use (although you can do the mac based stuff on a pc anyway... just change a few things like Command keys are Control keys or the right mouse button)

Well, I have come to dislike magazines. I bought some ComputerArts Specials and some Digits etc, but they're expensive when compared to what they offer. Most tuts go like " open fileX, then open fileY, both are on the accompanying CD,..."

I don't buy any more mags. Instead I buy a book from time to time.
I kinda like Friends of Ed. Photoshop face to face is interesting, so is Professional Photographic techniques, and New Masters of Photoshop (a bit more contemporary design). A timeless book imo is JohnPaul Caponigro's masterclass, edited by Adobe themselves. Apart from that, and free, is browsing the Net. Just take a look at the Links forum and click on every posting by Gaussian. A wealth of information and thousands of sites will open for you.

Yet the best way to learn is to play. Which, I can understand, must be difficult when you use the tool daily for professional purposes...

my eurocent.

Many thanks Erik. I've noted the books. Although i must admit my last trip to B&N proved dissapointing in the photoshop books department. My know isn't what's failing me, it's my creativity. Perhaps it's Florida. I don't feel a very good stimulus here. I think I should return to my place of birth. Santa Barbara. Either that or Spain! :D I do like reading Gaussin's posts they're informative and insightful certainly. You're not so bad yourself Erik!! Most of the regulars here have a lot to offer. I just wished I wouldn't have taken such a long break from the site. 7 years ago when i first came here I became 10x's better with photoshop almost overnight (because I stayed up and did ALL of Mark's tut's!! :bustagut: ) then i guess college and girls kept me away from my true passions. [doh] silly girls!! Oh well.. Anywho, I guess there's no cure for a lack of creativity. }:\ But there is this great forum and the rest of the internet :} even if most of the OTHER photoshop sites out there aren't so great :B Thanks for the help guys.

silly girls??? man, you risk your life. we have our gurettes here, and they won't like this...
hahaa.
just hang around here, and help us helping eachother. Nothing more creative than having to solve a problem you didn't invent yourself.
believe me.

Lompoc i'll tell you what i do when i need/want to be inspired... i read an interesting book covering a subject that i like... i go lay out on the grass in the park and stair at the sky... daydream awhile... rent some of your fav movies and rewatch them... or... just stay online at hunt down Galleries of other artists... that usually does it for me if noe of the other stuff does.

[honesty]

Lompoc you'll never egret those:
Design tools
Photoshop User (NAPP)
Computer arts, sometimes they have special Photoshop.

I think me and you come from the same school of thought Mark. This is generally the way I get all of my better ideas. Although it usually involves the beach (I guess you Canadians wouldn't be to up on that! :bustagut: ) and a blanket. The idea is still the same. Relax and everything you need will come along. Slow, methodical, and perfect. The Stanley way.

LOMPOC I always wondered if you got your name from Lompoc California. Because I live in Los Alamos he he he -- Hi <used to be> neighbor, how's the weather in Florida, hot and buggy??? sorry! Santa Barbara Chamber of commerce made me say that!

My nephew works on a Mac and he gets fab inspiration from magazines published monthly for their following. He sent me a years subscription of Communication Arts (its expensive) you probably know, it covers many media fields, focusing on print mainly but I found the art created for all media very stimulating and can be converted to digital so easily.

You are lucky if the current job you have that requires creativity. I do web design and most of my clients don't want to try anything different. I do the creative for fun and my own enjoyment.

This sounds pretty creative to me:

IMHO Beats Mark's rolling around on grass for ideas

Joyful :D

Hey Joy! Yes indeed I did get my name from Lompoc California! :D :bustagut: I was born there infact. I do have much desire to return to Santa Barbara county, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to in the U.S. I also considered moving to Madrid Spain...But to answer your question yes, Florida is hot and buggy and no I don't like that! :bustagut: Take care

A typical example of what I meant is the ComputerArts Projects issue47.
At first sight, you might think that they have a great Photoshop project for you to learn loads of new things. Even when you only browse through the tut, is looks fantastic. Yet, if you're used to the way of presenting, you'll dive a little deeper before spending your money...

In fact, you have to use several files which are on the CDRom, ok, I can understand that not everyone can have the same photographs, but what's worse imo, is that to do the complete tut, you also need Illustrator, Bryce5 and Strata3D. This makes it no Photoshop tutorial, but a combined tut.
Yes, you can learn a lot, but it *is* misleading. of course they don't lie, as on the cover you only see the woman's face with the Indian tiara, not the complete image. But that is what publicity is all about: never lie, but don't tell the whole thruth either.

Photoshop7's selection tools are great and lots of ooh's and aah's, but when talking about the MaskProPlugin, the native toolset suddenly, quote: "remains to this day long-winded and, frankly, a little dull."

There are indeed two Flaming Pear plugins for free (not for OS9)on the CD. But they are not very inspiring, and certainly not a must have in your toolbox.
I want more value for my money than that.

Edit: When I re-read this, it does sound a bit too harsh. The tutorial is still quite interesting for advanced users (you have to know all your tools like making selections from paths, adjustment layers, grouping layers etc). But, compared to a good book, it is rather expensive.
