So im doing a painting for a homework project concerning dynamic lighting. I'm supposed to use the circular gradient tool, but when I try to put down more than one gradient, it erases the previous gradient. Same with the paint bucket. If I fill up the background with color, and then try to put down a gradient, it erases the background color and replaces it with the gradient. But when I try to put down multiple gradients in a different image, I have no problems. I have my transparency checked. I need to get the painting done soon so I'm kind of desperate. Any idea's? I'm using photoshop cs5.

applyh gradients and paint bucket fills on seperate layers and then apply layer blending modes usualy overlay, soft light, screen and multiply for them to show layers that are neneath them.

Hmmm, tried that and it didn't work. I just noticed that if I put the gradient on the layer that the actual painting is on instead of the background, it replaces the entire painting with a gradient. Could it be a bug of some sort?

no bug that I can think off create a new layer make sure that is selected apply your gradient set blending mode to overlay to see underlying layer

So I set it to overlay, and what is now happening is when I put down a second gradient, it slowly erases the first gradient, each time I put down a new one. Why are you so finicky photoshop??

Because the only way you can apply multiple gradients to the same layer is if you make a selection first the gradient will only effect the area you selected. every new gradient needs its own layer if you are not making a selection. and then just to confuse you more you can then apply a layer mask to your gradient layers and use gradients to blend in the visible gradients for a more natural look.

Or you can try ms paint some people just find photoshop to complicated ?? If this still makes no sense upload your psd with a brief example of what your trying to do then maybe we can show you in easier steps.
