how do you make the main photoshop cs4 interface background show ur desktop like i have seen in a few youtube videos all i have is a ugly grey background

not sure if I follow. If you mean how do you get your desktop into PS, just hit the Printscreen button on your keyboard.
Then open PS, then File, New and ok. Then click edit than paste and there is your desktop.

As I said not sure what u mean but maybe that will help.

You need MAC OS X to do that and its some option under Window
Im a Windows User so I dont know what its called
