So one thing that i dont understand is that nowadays you can buy any any camera app for a smartfone and you have some pretty amazing filters for 2$. I cant even find a quater of the filters that are on my phone, in photoshop. The filters i have found for photoshop are hundreds of dollars. Why? Do free ones exist?

I'm sure there are free filters out there. Google would be your best source for them. But we are talking Photoshop here. The most powerful image editing tool on the planet. If you want a certain look for a photo there are most likely several ways to do it. All you need to do is search the Internet for a good tutorial.

Is there a certain looks you are wanting for a photo?

Depending on the PS version, there are a quite a lot of freeware plugins and filters available but be careful of downloading from questionable sites, they may be pirated market items.

Here's one from the forum archives and most of the links to the freebies still work ....... http://www.photoshopgurus.com/forum...ffects/16758-150-free-photoshop-plug-ins.html

And another, courtesy of an old member... http://www.richardrosenman.com/software/downloads/

And one more....

What do filters do ? Change things, and add to them. I can change images colors, sharpness, exposure and add things to images. All these things are in PS. Yes there ate plug ins that you can buy for filters, but no real need to.

What are you wanting to filter ?

And Alien Skin is a free app for IPhones .

Free things exist for many reasons. In the case of PS filters, a common reason is that small developers often feel that their filter wouldn't bring in enough money to make it worth their while to set up a mechanism to charge for it, but it strokes their ego to see their project actually being used, even if only by a relatively small number of people. So, they give it away for free.

In the case of larger developers who already have an online store or equivalent mechanism to charge for their products, they may have already tried to charge for a particular filter but hardly anyone bought it, so they are releasing it for free as a good-will gesture / advertising.

Also, I believe that a common reason that image modification apps for smart phone are so inexpensive is that their perceived value is low. If you are a pro making money off of your images, it's very unlikely you will use your phone for editing -- you will likely be using a workstation in a controlled lighting environment with one or more large, hardware calibrated desktop monitors. In contrast, the people who might use an image editing app on their phone are likely to be doing it for fun, as a hobby, etc., and you just aren't going to sell an app to them that costs as much as their phone.

Just my $0.02,

Tom

PS - A nice big list of PS filters (including free ones) and similar image modification software is Harald Heim's site:
