I am a new member to the Forum. I have used PS for a few years to do simple photo enhancements but still very much in the dark on its many techniques. My problem is I just got a new DELL 8500 64 bit computer with Windows 8 Pro and installed CS6 and when I do any type of clicking on images they go black and give me the checkerboard background similar to when you cut out an image. Clicking on them again brings up the cropped image or what ever function I was attempting. My immediate thought is that it must be the DELL's graphics board but I would expect a computer suitable for gaming would have the capability to handle the graphics. I went into Preferences>Performance and find out that it is an AMD Radeon HD 7570 processor and "Use Graphics Processor" is checked and Drawing Mode is set to Advanced. Can anyone tell me what my problem is and suggest a correction? Respectfully, Graphics Guy

Thanks Steve for replying. I tried unchecking "Use Graphics Processor" and noticed no apparent change. I then rechecked it and went into Drawing Mode and changed it from "Advanced" to "Basic" and it seems to work normally again. I also Googled AMD Radeon HD 7570 Driver for Windows 8 64 Bit and found a suggested file to download. When I did I found it to be a CAB file that I don't know how to utilize or install. I went into the Device Manager>Display Adapters, chose my graphics board, and selected update driver but it wouldn't recognize the CAB file. While there I checked the version and it was 8.981.0.0 and the one I downloaded is 8.982.10.0 so it is an updated version. Now I am undecided if I should pursue upgrading it or just leave well enough alone now that it is responding normally. Thanks again for the help. Respectfully, Graphics Guy

You should update your driver. The latest version is 9.012. Here's the download you need, it's an easy install process.

Here

Also the 8500 is a good machine. Got myself one as well :)

Thanks for the reply. I downloaded the file from the URL you supplied, installed it, restarted the machine but it still indicates version 8.981.0.0 in the Device Manager. ??? Since you have a 8500 I would like to sneak in an off-topic question. I have my Kensington Expert Trackball plugged into one of the top USB ports in the back of my 8500 but half the time it will not work when I start up the computer. If I remove and reinsert the plug everything works correctly. Have you ever experienced that action? Thanks again for taking the time to help me, I really appreciate it. Respectfully, Graphics Guy

The top usb ports are just regular usb 2.0 ports. It they will function the same as the other usb's that are colored black. This is probably a driver issue with Windows 8. Your particular issue has never happened to me, but I have had other things that 'aren't quite right' on Windows 8 compared to using my old Windows 7 machine.

As for your driver being up to date. Look at the version number within catalyst control panel, and you can also check for update from within that.

Thanks for the replies. I checked the version within the Catalyst Control panel and it is Version 8.981.0.0 and running Catalyst Update states "The current version is up to date". I downloaded it and installed it again with the same result so to avoid the Einstein syndrome, "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results", I have given up. I don't know why it won't accept 9.012. Respectfully, Graphics Guy

Well I don't know either. Perhaps that's just the latest version for that particular card? Anyway, the software knows better than you or I so I'm sure you'll be fine :)
