Photoshop CS4 and CS5 Acting Like They Are Possessed

I had to buy a new computer at the end of December...my old one crashed, finally. I had used CS4 on it for a long time and never had any problems. From the time I installed CS4 on the new computer I have had all kinds of strange problems. I'd be painting away and suddenly the program would put a streak of paint somewhere nowheres near where my brush tip was on the screen. I'd be erasing and suddenly it would erase somewhere else...not near my tool tip. When using the clone tool it would sometimes clone and pull large amounts of pixels from somewhere else and do a really strange clone. I have attached a photo of that as an example of what it's been doing. Here's the picture:

Where the short red line is is where I was working. Where the long red line is is where it created this strange clone.

There is no rhyme or reason to these events, it's not like every 5th or 8th etc. event, it's just random.

I ended up upgrading to CS5 and thought that might solve the problem. It hasn't. I'm still getting the same things happening. And a few nights ago it started being really slow. If I used the eyedropper it might take up to 6 seconds before the selection was made. Other operations also took way, way too long.

My new computer is using Windows 7 and I was using Windows XP. That's the only difference I can see. Both my old and new computers are HPs. I tried CS5 on my laptop, which has Windows Vista, and had my son-in-law try it on his new computer which has Windows7 and it worked on both so I think it must have something to do with the interface between CS5 and Windows 7.

I spent two days on the phone with Adobe to no avail. They couldn't solve the problem. I also have tried to get help from HP but they keep telling me it's a software problem...even though the software doesn't have any problem on other computers. I may be way wrong, but somehow I think it has to do with Windows 7. Has anyone had similar problems? Can anyone tell me how to get the problem fixed? Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks,
Marg

If you have not done so already, update your video drivers. Check on the video mfr site if HP doesn't have one.
