Photoshop CS2 question

I finally got my new Mac and have been installing software and getting it set up for two days now. I installed CS2 and opened it to just look around a little. Then it hit me, this program opened without a backdrop. I just have my work pallets and tool bars over the desktop. Is this how it's supposed to be (I hope not)? What do I need to do to get some kind of plain background for my images like in PS 7, CS etc.

Never mind. When nobody knew here I posted the question on the Adobe Forum and got the answer. Turns out this is normal for Mac. Go figure, huh?

Thanks, tini but that just opens a new window. I was wondering why Photoshop for the Mac had no background AT ALL. Turns out that PS for the Mac is made differently. Who knew, huh? Not sure why that is but.....

Hey Lee!

Sorry I didn't catch your post earlier. About that you have three possibilities on the Mac. Pressing F three times will show them all. The default is the one you have found. Pressing F fills the desktop with a neutral gray and leaves the image centered on the whole screen but leaves the Dock available.
Pressing F again gives you a black screen and the Dock is hidden.

You can drag the image around in the two colored background modes by holding down the Space bar which gives you the little grabby hand. If you want to change the background color of either the gray or black background you can choose your color, and use the Paint Bucket tool on the background while holding down the Shift Key.

Changing the display mode is also available iconically from the Tool Box.

Hey, no problem, Amigo. This forum was a little slow this morning and I was anxious to find out why my new CS2 had no background. Was not sure if I had a bug in my software or it was normal. Turns out it's normal for Mac's. My question started a mini debate over at Adobe. The pro Windows PS with a background and the pro Mac without. Being as how I learned on a Win machine with a background I don't like the Mac version. It's going to take some getting used to for me to constantly hit the F key just to get rid of my desktop. I wonder who thought up THAT at Adobe and what the reasoning was???????????????? [confused] . . . . . . . \:]

The benefit will be discovered when one has several images open at one time. You can arrange them to cycle with a single mouse click rather than using. Of course I don't know how the Windows version handles multiple images open at once.

One of the problems for me is that I continually hit the desktop and make PS disappear, then i have to do an additional click to bring it back. That is just annoying the h*** out of me right now. As I said, it'll take some getting used to. As you say, maybe once the learning curve is over I'll like this version better. \:]

Welles: The PC version is "CTRL/TAB" to rotate thru open documents

Lee: I have a PC at home and use a Mac at work, I'm so use to "right clicking" to get to submenus, there must be an equvilent for Mac. And for the life of me, I can't get the control/command, alt/option straight even thou I've seen many tutorials with PC/Mac shortcuts [confused]

I thought that the convention was that Mac is the force, while PC is the dark side/evil empire...

And being a new Mac owner (but platform agnostic) I begin to understand where it comes from.
