Photoshop CS suddenly has "Not Responding" error. Why?

Hi guys,

I've been using Photoshop CS on my Windows Vista computer for a few years now with no problems what-so-ever.

Then suddenly one day it stopped working. It launched just fine, just as normal. But when I would click on anything it would say "(Not Responding)" and basically just freeze up. Then after a minute or so a window would pop up that says "Adobe Activation - An error has been detected and the product cannot continue. Please reinstall the application."

I tried re-launching and re-booting, but no luck. So I reinstalled the program. No luck. So I uninstalled it, then re-installed it. No luck. I even tried the Ctrl-Alt-Shift reset thingy, but no luck. I called Adobe but they no longer support this version.

Any thoughts as to how to fix this very frustrating problem?

Thanks in advance...

What about memory issues have you check those? just an idea

Did you try checking to see if your registry was cleaned before the new install?? Some times things get left in an uninstall and the software will leave artifacts behind..

If it's not that, then it may be a corrupt file..

Well, no, but the problem happened out of the blue, years after it was installed for the first time. Know what I mean?

I suppose it could be... Anyone know how to fix a corrupt file?

I'm thinking it has something to do with your activation key or something. Did you buy it on a CD? Or did it come with an activation number, because it says Adobe Activation error product cannot continue. What version is this?

Is there a certain error # it's giving you??
Not a number, no. It actually appears to be fine upon launch. In fact it fully launches. But then when I click on File (or ANYthing else) the screen goes pale/white and it says "(Not Responding)" in the Title area (next to Photoshop CS). Then, if I wait long enough, an error box appears that says "Adobe Activation - An error has been detected and the product cannot continue. Please reinstall the application."

It's Photoshop CS. I bought it as an upgrade to Photoshop 7 (which was an upgrade to whatever version I had before that).

Totally legal copy -- Adobe even verified the serial number, but then said they couldn't help me because the version was too old.

By the way, I did try cleaning the registry, but it didn't help. :(

I agree! There has been a few companies that haven't given any support when things stop working, so I get a cracked version of tinterweb. If I've paid the money for it, I want it.

Suggesting cracking not a wise idea on forums guys.hint hint. See that edit button, use it be fore I do........ ;)

True!! It's not like he would be doing anything illegal Norm. I didn't suggest they just simply crack it with out buying it. I do not condone that. I do however condone getting what you paid for..

The law is the same in the US Chad...

I spent over 2 hours today (literally) with Adobe. About 30 minutes with one guy, and the rest of the time with a guy he transferred me to. The second guy was VERY slow, putting me on hold pretty often.

Here's an example of how it went.... Him: Can I get your phone number in case we get disconnected? Me: Sure, here ya go. Him: Thank you, sir. Now, can I get your phone number in case we get disconnected? Me: I just gave it to you. Him: Oh, yes, you did. Sorry.

That's about the gist of how things went. After being on the phone for over 2 hours, he put me on hold for over 10 minutes, then came back and said "Sorry, sir, but I was just told that Photoshop CS doesn't work on Windows Vista, therefore we don't support it. Me: But I've been using it on Vista for over 2 years without ANY problem until a few days ago. Him: Yes, I do see your point, sir, but there's nothing I can do. We don't support it.

hopefully you have a older backup you can install if thats the case

Hi SoundsGood I have a couple of questions and thoughts.

Have you run CHKDSK yet?
Have you tried running PS in Safe Mode?
Have you tried a System Restore?
Have you disabled your anti virus program and tried running PS?
To do that you should disable the AV program and then re-boot, don't just disable it and run PS, that won't work.

Have you run msconfig.exe and disabled the startup programs?
