Try this:


Select with Color Range, or press Ctrl+Alt+2, hit Delete key, deselect, then Layer->Matting->Remove White Matte.


And keep in mind that there is no true solution to this. No one can tell if 50% Gray is


a) the result of 50% opaque Black on the White background


or


b) the result of 100% opaque Gray on the White background
