Photoshop Brush Takes Extreme Time to Perform Task

Hello Folks,
Seeking suggestions to fix extremely slow Photoshop brush. I followed the usual internet suggestions, to no avail. (Turned off smoothing, optimized RAM use, etc. All worked ok a few days ago). I'm using Photoshop CC version 22.5 and the current version of Lightroom. I've also performed a "purge" and restarted the program, again, without success. For example, if I paint on a mask with just a few strokes of a regular soft brush, (literally just a couple of strokes), it takes over a minute to "recover" to where I see the curser again. Any assistance is appreciated. Thank you!

Hardware specs? and what graphic cards and drivers?

Photoshop exhibited none of these issues a week ago. I'm not using new hardware or systems. Maybe an update issue??

I've read that brush smoothing causes problems. Check its setting - if it's set to 100, roll it back to 0 and see if that helps.
