Photoshop Actions

Hello All,
Can somebody please tell me, when recording Photoshop Actions, how to make the user enter the input? For eg. I am making an action for creating stitched effect in Photoshop. I know to do the effect and I recorded the action too. But when somebody plays my action, I want them to be able to enter for what they want the stitched effect on. The user should be able to enter the Text or shape for which they want the effect. Please somebody let me know.

You designate what the stitched effect will be on, not the user.

For example, if your action adds a stitched effect to text or shapes, then you create the starting point for the action for anyone else using the action.
In your instructions for your action, you tell the user that they must create a layer named "Stitched" and add whatever text, or shape that they wish to stitch to this layer.

Your first step in recording your action is to "choose Stitched layer", then the rest of the action will play out from there.
