Hey, Gauss, what's a Windows man doing reading a Mac rumors site? [:I

Anyway, ThinkSecret usually gets it right, so 4th quarter 2003 is prolly a good approximate date for PS 8. At least I hope so...I just got 7 recently!

:bustagut: Didn't even notice that!

I pulled that link from Adobe's Photoshop for Windows forum ;)

Interesting news. 4th quarter would seem a bit late to me, but maybe not. Fortunately I have a maintenance contract. When the version changes I get updates right away on Photoshop, Illustrator, In-design, mmm, probably some others also. Photoshop alone is , I think, 35 licenses.

JESUS CHRIST!

Sorry :)

But Adobe's dev cycle has been 18 months for as long as I remember.

And that means I'll probably need to get writing sometime in the fall this year.

Damn. My 7 book isn't even cold yet! Ah well. Upgrades are how companies make their money.

My Best,
Wot a headache,
Gare

As well as writers like you, gary hehehe :bustagut: [:I .

Problem is - imagine all the software companies upgrading their wares at the same time. OUCH on my poor asian bank account :{ .

I can see I will just have to face it........... and have a permanent money pot to put my coins in for PS :bustagut: :bustagut: :bustagut:

one for the programs and one for the books I keep buying :D he he he

Problem is: do you need to upgrade? Adobe tries to convince you that the answer is: "yes, undoubtably". But I must admit that there are whole rooms and cellars in the castle that is Photoshop that I've never even visited.
And I wonder what they may add that attracts me, that I can use...and that I want to pay money for...
PS7 came out because of OSX. And now PS8 will only work under Jaguar. Who is playing with whom now?

Well, we don't know for sure if it'll only work under Jaguar...ThinkSecret may be wrong about that, plus it's fairly early in the dev cycle and things could change.

Personally, (and I'll know I'll get some disagreement on this) I think it's a good idea, at the point when PS 8 does come out, to make it OS X only on the Mac side. There's a certain point where developers should do that; you can't support old OS's forever, nor support dual, very different OS's on one platform. Plus, if they develop a lot features that specifically take advantage of OSX, they'd need to rewrite the app almost completely for OS9. It's certainly nothing new; PS 7 won't run on anything earlier than 9.1 on the Mac.

Um, make no mistake...

Hey, Vee...

I know you were kidding, but honestly?

I do not WANT Adobe to upgrade, and certainly not for the sole reason of being more compatible with digital cameras. What: we'll now have the OS, the manufacturer's utilities and Photoshop competing for what downloads the images from chip saddle (or umbilical cord) to the computer?

No, I do not welcome this for the sole reason that I've finally got my head around teaching online, and if this is true...and I think it is...I will have to stop writing on this forum for almost three months doing research and writing.

Nuts,
Gare

I quote the article:

"Photoshop 8 will also include "filter layers," allowing for non-destructive image editing and manipulations, similar to Adobe After Effects' adjustment layers"

Does anyobe know how that works...sounds quite interesting ;)

The upgrade will also have tweaked 16-bit support, improved ability to work with non-square pixels, and significantly optimized and cleaned-up code on both the Mac and Windows side

I like that part in bold :D

The filter layers thing sounds interesting to me, too, Gauss.

Any AfterEffects users out there who know what this is? I have a vague idea of what it could be, but I don't want to start speculating. Such things gain a life of their own on the Internet, and my musings may morph into a "trusted Adobe source says" :D

yay! I want photoshop 8 now! [excited] [confused] I'm still dtuck with 6, and waz ganna buy an upgrade at costco but i waited to long to decide and now it's all gone  I hope there's an upgrade from 6 to 8! :D

Yup, agree Gary. With all the research and testing that goes into writing a tutorial book, you'll go nuts with no time for anything else. But when the time comes that you have to, I know you find enjoyment in it and guys like us appreciate your hardwork.

Gaus, probably it will work like adjustment layers?

Hmmm... this all sounds very interesting, but, in the end, I have to agree with Erik, inasmuch as, just as I'm getting my feet wet with PS7, you'd have to do a damn good "sell job" on me to get me to pay more $'s for (maybe?) a couple of new features that I may not even have a chance to discover or appreciate or get used to, until version 9 comes out... [confused]

I hope that, for the sake of folks like Gary etal (and users like myself), that Adobe sticks to their 18 month dev cycle! :\ Only time will tell, whereas 'speculation' is part of the here and now...

16 bit support

My take on some of the new features (I see digital camera support as unwanted and inevitable :)

we'll finally be rid of that damned sRGB that is the default in versions 6 and 7. Digital cameras have a larger color space than film (or at least a different space, depending on make and manufacturer) so I'm supposing Adobe will either have to deploy a special instance of CIELAB to cover overlapping color spaces...or wouldn't it really be nice (and welcome) to have a Color space wizard that will dialog box the user through the native color space of digital film into Web Space, printing space, inkjet space, and so on.

Just postulating here.

My Best,
Gare
