i didn't search this whole forum, but 2 days ago when i did a general search for the crashing problem, it didn't show up so i'm assuming it's not out here.
photoshop 5.5. yes, that old version. i've never had a problem. recently loaded it on a new laptop running Win7. it loaded without a problem (the older 4 version wouldn't load because of the change from 32-bit to 64-bit, but the 5.5 loaded and it "read" the old disc ok during install). i used it a few times for some minor things.
then i used it for more extensive work on a file. for a while (an hour?) it was fine. then it started crashing every so often whenever i used the fill/paintbucket tool. i'd restart, and it'd be okay for a minute, then crash again. always when using the fill tool. eventually, it was every time i tried to use it.
here's something really strange--i tend to save rather frequently when working in photoshop anyway, and i started saving after every action. after the first time it crashed and i went to open the file back up after a re-start, i looked at the date/time in the details list of the Open box. it showed no change in the date/time from the last time i'd opened the file (several months ago). i thought for sure i'd lost over an hour of work. yet....the changes were in there, up to the time it crashed. for each subsequent crash, it never showed a change in the date/time of last use, yet any changes up to the crash were saved.
i searched online but really found nothing. something about going into properties and activating or deactivating OpenGL (?). but that wasn't listed anywhere in the properties i could find so figure that's not relevant to this older version. but i did find something about how much memory the program could use, so i upped that amount thinking maybe it was something to do with that, plus, i have a ton of memory on this new machine, so why not?
but i couldn't get it to work and finally uninstalled the program and reinstalled it. now i can't even open photoshop. when i do i get "Could not initialize Photoshop because there is not enough memory (RAM)."
i'm not super tech-savvy, especially with OS-type stuff. i have no idea what to do now. if i'd get my desk cleaned off enough, i guess i could go work on my OLD desktop, where 5.5 works fine. i'm not sure what specs might be needed.
ASUS i5, Win7 HomePremium, 4 GB RAM
Intel HD Graphics 4000 video card (nothing special, i know)
any help?
and sorry if this is covered somewhere else. then please direct me to that thread!
TIA!
