My wife took this really cute pictures of my daughters, but being a Dad, I want it to look cool. So here's my thoughts- I own Photoshop CS6 but my wife normally is the one who uses it. Would it be a nightmare for me to turn this-

Into something like this?-

I'd like it to say "It all Ended 12/7" (which is the little one's birthday) but I just think this would be epic. Any help on how to get started?

I dont want their faces changed at all, just that background, and possibly the text at the bottom. Even the blood on the faces is not needed. Because I apparently don't "have enough posts" I cannot link you the new Hangover 3 movie poster that spoofs this Harry Potter one. THATS what I'm looking for. Check it out.

Is this what you are after?

Yes! Only I'd like to color their faces like the poster does (they look whited out almost?) And the text at the bottom "It All Ended 12/7". I've been working since 5am to try and do this, and you just did it 100 times better than what I got. Good Lord. Thanks so much! If I really cant do this, is it okay if I use yours you just did? I'm going to keep trying though :( Unless you can just whip that right out?

so just change the mood a little like this HP.pngcant upload the .psd because its 40mb, attachement manager just crashed >_>

No problem with using anything I have posted but from the sound of it the other image is more what you are after.

BTW I would leave things as they are,,,,that is no text. Or perhaps say "it all started", not ended. Putting it that way is pretty harsh and kids are impressionable. I don't think you want to turn a beautiful moment into one with negative overtones but thats just me. The text is easy to do yourself, just click on the text tool, select the text size (at top of screen more or less) and select the font (top left more or less), and away you go.

here is the photoshop file for the effects

Now that image is very harsh and negative. IMHO def not a good idea. You might want to clear this with the wife before letting your daughter see it. Honestly not a good idea, I am beginning to feel sorry about getting involved with this. I would think you would want to foster close and loving ties between your children, this sends a very dark message.

EDit: I have been thinking about this and as a parent of these children I would think you would be horrified by the image posted by chrisix. The children look as if they had died, been buried in a shallow grave, and then dug up again. The image bothers me and I do not even know your kids. This one is def not appropriate in my opinion.

Maybe its just that I am new to this forum and perhaps this sort of thing is normal. I sincerely hope not though.

All I have to say is, Why? Such a lovely photo to mess with like this effect. To each is own though.

@the OP:

Ditto the cautions voiced by previous posters.

While almost any sort of image manipulation is possible using Photoshop, some simply are not appropriate.

Almost all of the common "looks" now have acquired fairly well defined psychological / environmental meanings. For example, in any serious photography, a cross-processed / grunge look is almost always used to denote mystery, a seedy crime-ridden, decaying environment, a morgue lit by fluorescent lights, etc.

I have *never* *EVER* seen this look applied to kids of this age other than by rank amateurs who have just discovered that it can be done quite easily (aka, Instagram) or folks with the maturity level of a junior HS boy and the sensitivity of a toad.

At most, a fantasy look for a toddler means putting an obviously fake plastic fireman's hat on them, or dressing them up as obviously fake cowboys & Indians, or spacemen, or little princesses, but NOT making them look like they actually might be dead. This is not just my opinion, it is the behavior of the overwhelming majority of parents and the products available in any legit photo studio.

As other have said, I strongly suggest you re-consider this.

If you are that hot to play with the cross-processed look, take a snapshot of yourself in looking strung out in some seedy neighborhood at night, and I'll be happy to give it a grunge look myself -- just don't do it to your kids.

Just my $0.02,

Tom M

BTW, not that I'm advocating anything as sappy as this, I'll bet you that 95% of all moms would even prefer something as far in the other direction as this over the corpse / HP Lovecraft oozing putrescence horror look.

I don't like it...BUT I will never censor an image...I just won't look at it.

@Paul - re: Lovecraft, same here. I used to read a lot of his stuff but haven't done so in years. It was great fun. I'll have to dig out some of my old books out and re-read them.

@Mike Mc - re: censoring, if I had any authority, I agree with you that there are almost no works of art that I would censor (meaning prevent others from accessing them). However, I certainly don't hesitate to voice my opinion on a piece, and I always reserve the right not to take a job.

@Clare - IMHO, you're certainly taking it in the right direction - a reasonable compromise - but I still think that there is a strong visual and emotional clash between the subject and mood of the new background. If I were to work on this image, I probably would extract the two subjects, move them apart a bit to give them some breathing room, try to complete the backs of their heads (which are currently cropped away), leave the skin color as I currently have it, but decorate the background with Harry Potter / wizard-related toys / props and a setting that is happy and appropriate for a child's Harry Potter themed party (eg, kids on brooms riding around in the sunlight, kids costumes (http://img.costumecraze.com/images/vendors/rubies/7258-large.jpg), etc.).

In fact, if the OP had stayed with his original request, "...I dont want their faces changed at all, just that background, and possibly the text at the bottom...", I wouldn't have especially agreed, but I would have had no major problem with it, and probably would have helped him. However, when he switched to, "...Yes! Only I'd like to color their faces like the poster does...", that's when I decided I didn't want to work on it.

Cheers y'all,

T
