Pen Tool Behaviour

or is it my mouse?

Today my pen tool started adding an extra anchor point after each point I would make and as I pull out a handle it becomes a new point instead. I have looked at all the tool settings and restarted PS. Now, here's a weird thing. When I try to reset preferences, instead of getting the message, Delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings file?, I get asked if I want this program to make changes to my computer.

And sure enough, all my set preferences are the same. This is also happening after restarting my computer.

i'd change your mouse, my GXT14 mouse ended up doing something similar it made an extra click when i didn't want it to. so if you think it's your mouse, change your mouse :)

or clean it? just a piece of hair my cause that

Now really iDad, I have brushes for hair and refine mask to clean up hair, but even a slight hair in Photoshop can cause this? Are you drinking man?

I don't drink man, I drink coffee, water, milk.......etc etc, but never tried man.
I thought you said mouse was messing up

I see now, Z thru me off with mouse comment........ thats easy to do you know! :banghead:

JK anyway. It could be the mouse! I put in new batteries, but then you have heard of "planned obsolescence?"

. . . in which no manufactured objects are made to the standards of factory specs in the first half of the 20th C. If things will last that well, how could the corporations sell us new stuff? Oh yeah, new apps! 3G! 4G! 1K G!

yeah I heard of it and suspect it all the time........ they do it just to get an extra buck out of ya!

So now my new manipulation has to wait. I just can't deal with trying to make the quick select and refine edge/mask work to get the clean selection I want. Oh well, I get too involved in these things anyway and hours fly by. I have a client this evening and have to leave in 3 hours, so maybe it is just as well. I'm like a kid on Christmas. Can't wait to play with my new toy/new idea.

Sounds like a good reason to get a bamboo tablet......You won't go back to your mouse !

LOL, thanks for helping me to solve this in the real world!

I like my mouse. But I am willing to try a tablet. Never felt like it was necessary as I have good control over the mouse. Anyway, I don't think this is a mouse problem. But just to let you know, I have asked Santa for a tablet for my birthday next month. He still owes me.

Hi Clare -

re extra anchor points appearing, this has happened to me as well. I blew some compressed air through it and it fixed the problem. It was fine for another few months, but started happening more and more frequently, so bought a nice new mouse and the problem was gone. FWIW, I bought a nice new Logitek with a zillion buttons on it. I then installed a little (free) program called "X-mouse button control" to assign the buttons and the wheel to various keyboard events that I use a lot in PS and it's like going to heaven -- I hardly have to remove my hand from the mouse.

re your comment: " I get asked if I want this program to make changes to my computer."

Are you logging in to your computer as the same user? Have you made any recent changes to "User account control" in the control panel? If the latter is turned on, it tends to generate messages like the one you quoted.

OK, that's it. You're right Tom, time for a new mouse. I won't even go through what just happened but it includes losing my reply and a few other nutty things.

So OMG, dv8. Planet of the rats! or Gramma, what big eyes you have! You did all that just to get your point across? :bustagut: OK, point taken.

Alright already guys. I have a Logitech, but it's like 3 years old. Dave's extra mouse is already behaving better. Thanks everybody for your help and fun chatting, iDad and Mike!

Thanks Zee. It was indeed the mouse. Luckily I was able to remedy it right away as my finace had 2 extras in the office. Yay. A whole variety of weird behaviours are gone, gone, gone! And I have my beloved pen tool back, lol. Or should I say, XD!
