Can anyone tell me the benefits of making a work path instead of a path with the pen tool? Why are the gray/white thumbnail icons in the Paths tab inverted for each type?

Hi !

Perhaps I've misunderstood your question here, but I'll try answer some of it.
When you draw a Path with the Pen Tool it's automatically named Work Path in the Paths Panel.

If you save the Path by either doubble clicking on it or pulling it down to the New Path icon it's re-named to Path 1 - or you can rename the Path to whatever you want.

Hope it helps some.

Thanks for your help!

Looks like I was creating it on a shape layer instead of a path layer. I still don't understand the advantages/disadvantages of drawing the path on one over the other, though.

If you are looking for the advantage a path has over a selection: A path is infinately adjustable, whereas a selection is not.

Actually I was wondering what the benefit is of creating a path on a shape layer verses creating it on a path layer. I'm outlining a car, windshield, tires, etc. to create masks for selective editing and find myself with a list of different paths where some are work paths and some are vector masks or named paths. For example, if I outline a car with a work path and create a selection from the "closed" path, Photoshop selects everything but the car. I know I can just invert the selection, but this just seems strange to me. Maybe this is a work flow issue, but I still wonder why the software does this...
