Path will not curve not even with direct selection tool!

I created a line using the pen tool, but no matter where I click on the line, it will only add an anchor point. Reddit mentioned that I need to use the direct selection tool by holding ctrl, except that will only move the line around the canvas, it will not curve the line by any means! I mentioned that the direct selection tool is only moving the line and not curing it but the topic was ditched and I never got a follow up.

Does anybody on here know how to fix this?

Which is exactly what you want.

THEN use the 'Direct Selection' tool to MOVE that anchor point......the line will form a curve.

All this is of course reliant on the fact that your 'line' is a path, not a shape.
