Illustrator Patent diagram shading

I need to create shading similar to what you see on the mill piece and material.

The lines are jagged if you zoom in...I am curious if anyone has a tip for doing this.

Are you sure you want to emulate that look?

I just looked at about a half-dozen patents on www.uspto.gov, and not one showed that artifact. Here's a typical illustration from a patent. It's a screen shot at a magnification of300%. It shows no such artifact:

If I had to guess, the jagged lines that you see were caused by someone in the chain from the original image at the patent office to the image you posted using too low of a resolution. This type of artifact is well-known and is called "stair-stepping". There are many descriptions of it on the web.

IMHO, it is NOT something to be emulated.
