Paintbrush behaviour

When I paint a flat colour with the paintbrush tool i get one of two different behaviours, and i can't figure out what setting is causing the difference...

With the opacity of the paintbrush set at (say) 20% the brush will either (a) paint at the same opacity even if i go back over an area that i've already painted, until i release the mouse and press again in which case it regards this as a new phase and if i overlap an already painted area those areas become darker.... or (b) it increases the darkness of the painted area each time i pass over it even in the same movement (ie without releasing the mouse button).

Can't figure out what I'm doing different - can anyone suggest?

Will have to experiment when I get home. The first scenario you describe (a), must be the default, because that's what my brushes do all the time.

There are LOTS of different brush tool settings, so I'm not sure which one changes this behavior.
