Illustrator Overlaying images in text

I am trying to design a graphic for my boat. I want to incorporate the images of our dogs into the boats name. I would like to make the images black where they are not on top of lettering and white when they are. What would this function be called? Is this a clipping mask? The whole clipping mask thing confuses me.

set your layer blending mode to difference or exclude may do it subtract also worth a try
