Old Photo Restore Assistance and Critique of Work

This is the image that I have tried cleaning up as best as I can, I can upload the original if that helps, but I do feel it could be done much better if I knew more methods to restore. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I just started to use photoshop to fix some old pictures I have so my knowledge is very, very limited. It would be nice to see the original untouched image so we could see how much you managed to get done by yourself, from what I have seen around the web as far as restoration goes, this doesn't look that bad.

I would start by removing the color cast if the tint isn't wanted. I used a curves level and used the white and black eyedroppers to select a white and black spot on the image. To find the spots, I held the alt key and moved the white/black triangle on the bottom of the curves to find the brightest and darkest spots to click with the corresponding sampler.

The damaged part can be covered to an extend with the clone stamp tool, sampling from under the man on the far left and using that good section to fill in the missing part. The design on the wall might be fixed the same way, but sampling from higher up the wall and slowly filling in the missing pieces.

As for other help, youtube and a google search for photo restoration will point you to quite a few guides which will certainly do you much more good than my simple thoughts. Good luck to you and keep us updated as you go along.

I think this would look good as a black and white. Use a Black and White Adjustment Layer and experiment with some of the presets to get the look you want. The patch tool will work nicely for the damaged areas. You can also use the spot and healing brush tools to fix some of the splotchy areas. Example with your tiny image.

Nice job ALB68, I will have to explore the patch tool a bit more for my own fixes. Can I ask how you fixed the design on the wall on the far right? I was thinking the clone tool but would love to hear any other ideas on how to tackle similar issues.

I didn't. I was just doing a quick one to show you what it would look like. I will tell you a slow but sure way to fix some things. If you will zoom in really close, to the point you can see the individual pixels, then use the eyedropper tool to select a close by color (use point sample) then set a hard brush to 1 pixel. Then start painting over those pixels a few at a time. When you move into another color region, enter Alt and your eyedropper comes up again. Continue working until you get what you want. I find that sometimes, I just can't fix small areas in a small picture using the other tools and this is usually a last resort..but it works for me. Good luck!
