Haven't had this issue in ages. Last time I had a mac and this PC is not the same.

I saved through some pretty advanced stages but then forgot to keep saving, and I have rather more work in this project than I want to lose . . . aaargh.

How do I increase the RAM for PS?

32 or 64bit?

Windows 32 only recognizes 3gb of memory and Photoshop 32 will only use about 1.3gb of that.
Windows 64 recognizes up to 128gb.

PS32 uses up to 3gb in that with a 64bit OS and PS64 will use all available memory.

I'm doing this from memory but it should be close enough,

Also Clare to conserve on RAM, be sure to save your progress and then use the Purge>All command as it frees up all of the RAM that Ps is currently using. There is one drawback to this though. When using the Purge command, it clears the History panel. Trust me when I say that I've crashed Photoshop plenty of times when working on my 3D images. You can always see how much RAM Photoshop is using at any given time by monitoring the Scratch Sizes information. Below is a screenshot of where it is. To access it, just click on that right pointing arrow at the bottom of the document window.
