I'm starting to plan a new project focused on non-destructive editing techniques in Photoshop.

Here are some of my favorite techniques. I'm wondering if I'm missing any, or if you guys have any particular favorites?

(in no particular order):

1. Adjustment Layers

2. Smart filters

3. Masks

4. Non-destructive dodging/burning

5. Non-destructive lens flare

6. Sample all layers function (e.g.: for healing or clone stamp brush)

7. Refine edge tool

8. Masking smart filters and adjustment layers

9. Non-destructive cropping

10. Layer styles

11. Smart objects

12. Using editable work paths for selections, instead of lasso tool etc...

13. Alpha channels

14. Shapes and vector work

I use adjustment layers a LOT. Best way to work, but in some situations, only descructive techniques will give you the exact result you're after. Fortunately, they are few.

Some people consider the erasing or deleting pixels within Photoshop destructors But if you stay ahead of yourself you're right the save button, is your friend

I guess you could add camera raw to your list, I know this would probably be under smart filters especially in cc as it is actually their in the filter menu. But camera raw (acr) could have a whole series of tutorials just on that 1 filter.

lol What I mean by that is always save your original and if you're worried about the next step, save before you step into uncharted territory to be ready to start again

Where is the erase function ...I use a black brush, and always work on a duplicate layer

Where is the erase function? Are you serious?

I understand that, the only thing I have issue with that is the file sizes tend to get crazy,(as you said once you get into numerous layers) but for sure it's a safety net, without a doubt. You have no argument from me on that.

A solid ,let's say 400 pixel layer will not add up

Edit: stupid iPad spell check drives me crazy

I thought we were beyond the days when hard drives were filling up, I personally have 5 Tbs of hard drives on my machine, I also have a 4 Tb NAS drive for my own personal local cloud all accessible from any computer on my network. ANd then failing that I also have my own cloud network hosted online that has several Terabytes worth of space that I host on the back end of my dedicated servers. so if you cant afford an extra hard drive that is about $90 for a 1 TB drive you can buy web hosting from godaddy or similar that for $5 a month gives you unlimited space, and create your own cloud storage or ftp access.

So where as hundreds of 10 - 100 mb psds are not ideal it is not as if we are confined to 120 GB hard drives these days, STorage is cheap, hosting is dirt cheap there is always a solution to get more storage.

What are you going to do with those build a podium?
