New Layer Set question

I am trying to learn from Bouton's Inside PS7 which I just received and right out of the gate I am stuck on an issue.
I have creaated a new layer set and am trying to drag and drop a layer into the set as instructed. (Page 7) When I do nothing happens. It will not go into the folder like it is supposed to. Any idea what I am doing wrong? It simply sets itself in the layer palette order.
I understand that I should be able to put any number of layers in a new layer set. I really was hoping I could get past page 7 of his book sometime today.
Thanks.
George

Are you sure tha you are dragging a layer, and not a background layer?

Do you drag the layer on the layer set's name, or really just under the set? (if the layer you are dragging is not situated just under the set)

re; the layer set

I think I am doing it right. I click on the layer I want to put into the folder, drag it down on top of the layer set folder and drop it. But it does not go into the folder. It just relocates itself under the layer set folder. There is still nothing in the layer set folder itself.
Hope I am making myself clear on this.
Thanks.

Hi George04,

Drag the layer you wish to put in a set onto the name of the set. You will see the name highlight and the layer you are dragging will be placed in that set. You don't actually have to activate a layer to drag it.

Yes, you need to drag on the name.
The indication that your layer is in the set is that the layer thumbnail moves to the right in the Layers Palette.

Got it.
What a dummie I am. When I went to open a New Layer Set in the layer pallet I opened a New Layer instead of New Layer Set.
Now, you all have my permission to give me 50 lashes with a wet noodle for taking up your time.
Thank God I can now proceed to page 8. At this rate I will be about 5 years getting through Inside PS7.

Ah! \:] I was sure that there was something wrong, because Gary's book are very easy to follow. Make sure to double-check the illustrations :righton:

Did you know that the Great Gary Bouton has a sub-forum in here? (see the inside track!)

George,

To help alleviate some confusion, open Preferences > General and make sure "Show Tool Tips" is checked. Then when you let your cursor hover over almost any tool or button for more than a second, a tool tip window will appear and name the item your cursor is hovering over. Tool tips really are a handy helper.
