The dove is symbolic as they relate to death. I would say if he were already dead the doves should be flying away. As far as symbolism goes, I think that is the way you have it is ok.

Larry, the Dove, it also symbolizes peace ..... I think OP was referring to the latter

the wall represents his imprisonment the doves represent death then peace circling around waiting for his time , if he was dead i would of made the image bigger with the doves higher in the air
 
I really like the concept here, and the use of texturing is great.

Personally I get that you're trying to contrast the whiteness of the doves with the background, but I would consider adding some subtle yellow/orange tones to the doves to blend slightly better with the wall backdrop. I'm talking really subtle mind you.

Right now it just doesn't feel like a cohesive realistic scene, but I don't know if that's what you're going for?
 
Awesome, let me know how it turns out. Also, perhaps a little cliche, but you could always have stray feathers falling down from the birds to symbolize his decline.
