need some tips

there's a good chance that the background image was done in a 3d app, like cinema 4d, although it can be done in PS The green transparent banner was done in PS. It's just a rectangle with a color fill and manipulated opacity. Plus a black stroke. The grid was done with a brush, but there are so many ways to do that.
well, here's an attempt. it's just to show you that these sort of shapes can be done in PS. Being that they're abstract, there are no real rules. just create a shape and start tweaking and distorting and manipulating layers. it's kind of like digital fingerpainting. this took about half an hour.

YEs, playing with blenging modes is paramount.
For the grid, create a small transparent document, select some areas at the side and fill them. Go to edit>define pattern, and you can apply it in the big document.
The shapes Ron used were created with shape layers, or intertwined selections, and it seems that he used a bevel and emboss layer style...

Hey, ronmatt that is good to go 
and moderator thanks for explaining what was done 8)), but how do you intertwin the ring with the horizontal bar going through it?

\:/ it took me a minute or two to figure it out but how does this look? I know the ends aren't as pointy but, I am new to PS. Many Thanks ronmatt :}

Well, here is an attempt to do what you did ;\ Not the greatest, realism is lacking but I tried. What do you think?
I think that your on your way. just keep playing around and you'll get it. 
There's probably about 10 more processes in mine. if you keep 'clicking' and 'tweaking' it'll get there. it needs more contrast and alot more color blending. and the sphere is somewhat flat. I'll post an example of how to make the sphere, although that's already been done somewhere on this forum
