Ok, so I just made this wallpaper http://therealkingeddy.deviantart.com/#/d5o9eao

Now, I like how it looks but I wanted to make Lebron's legs add some effect to the picture. I wanted his leg that is behind the J to be in front of it. I tried to be smart about it and make it its own layer and put the leg layer over the text layer, but that makes it look very choppy and ugly. Any tips to doing this in a way that looks nice? I'm really crappy with the pen tool even though I should learn to use it

try using edit - define pattern before you type the text you could have it as part of his leg in the foreground ,try googling utube on it

You can use the quick selection tool to do this, select the leg with the tool, redefine edges (allows you to make the selection smoother) and then make it a separate layer via cut/copy.

Hi Eddy,

You pretty much answered your own question. This is a very simple effect that can be achieved with the PEN TOOL ONLY.

Temporarily reduce the opacity of the text layer down so you can see Labrontes leg through the text. Now, highlight the layer that contains Labronte, use the pen tool in PATH mode to select his leg that is to be on top of the text. You only need to choose the area of the leg that is just barley outside the text.

When done, right click within the document and then chose make selection, you will get the marching ants. Next, hit command + J to copy this selection to a new layer. This layer will only contain his leg that you just selected. Place this new layer on top of the text layer. Return your text layer back to full opacity.

sorry Sam but the Pen tool is not necessarily the only tool you can use to select that area

Your absolutely right. I was typing too fast and my brain was way ahead of my fingers! What I really want to say is that the Pen Tool would be the only tool I would use for this type of selection. Sorry for the implied suggestion that it was the ONLY method, it was not intentional!

Pen Tool would prove to be the life saviour many times especially when it comes to tricky and complex selection areas.. So yes, the more you practice Pen tool.. better it would be
