Need help with styles....

I've been messing around with Photoshop CS3 Extended for awhile. It's actually the very first version of Photoshop I've ever used. I've just been making background and things like that with brushes. I found some shapes and styles and such that I downloaded and would like to use, but I can't figure out how to pull them up for use???? I came across one way, but I don't even recall how I went about it. I remember that whatever I did brought up my folders that were labeled as they are in my hard drive under my Photoshop folder, but they were all empty.??? They're not empty on my HD so I don't understand why they appeared to be when I opened them from Photoshop. If anyone could help me with this, I'd very much appreciate it! Thanks so much- Kim ;)
 
I've never actually had an occasion to use styles, so I just went into photoshop and found what you're talking about. I assume you already tried this method?:

(in step one you're clicking on those 3 parallel lines, in case I wasn't clear)

if that doesn't work, I'm afraid I can't help you...
