Need Help with Filling in Pen Selection

When I create a shape with the pen tool and attempt to fill it with my foreground color, it fills the outside of my shape. This has not occurred previously because it usually fills inside the object that I create. On my path's folder, the outside of my object is "white" so the pen tool in an essence creates an inverse of my shape. HELP a newbie out :) Thanks!

I don't consider myself a newbie anymore, but far from a pro:) but I have a thought on it.

Do you have the layer with the path in it selected? If the path is filled with white when you created it, then you click on another layer and fill it, well you get the idea.
