Need help updating/changing logo

I need some help re-creating the logo I've attached from scratch so I have more control over the design elements.

I want to remove the "black box" background, I need to change the color and size of the type, and I want to change the aspect ratio of the entire logo so that it stretches wider and is not quite as tall.?

I'm an intermediate PS user, but don't have much experience with type effects.? If someone would be willing to walk me through the process of recreating this, I would be very grateful!? (Note, I'm mostly talking about the text effect... I think I could handle the red line and possibly cloning the sun and flowers out, though if you have any tips on that as well I'll take 'em!)

Thanks,
Chris

Welcome to PsG

Ouch... recreating another "logo" from scratch might be a good idea. (I put logo between quotes as this could not be qualified as a logo: usually, logos are clean vector images, scalable, that can work in black and white; in this case we have a pixellised text, with a small readability, and a quite complex overall image, gaps in the curve...).

You should find a matching font, then render it to pixels, and use liquify to distort it, or, in CS2 (you did not state what version you are using), convert it to a smart object and warp it. (the regular text warp options might not be sufficient for the current distortion)

For the effect on the text, it looks like a combination of filters, maybe plaster or stucco?

Thanks for your reply. I completely agree with you on this "logo". But the project manager loves it and I'm stuck with doing something similar.

I have PS2, so I will play around with the "warp" functions. I recall doing this and not being satisfied with the result. Does anyone have an idea of what the previous designer might have used to get the current effect?

When you refer to stucco and plaster text effects, are those in the layer blending modes dialog box?

Thanks again,
Chris

There's a chance that the designer started out by using an illegal substance of some sort, then just took it from there. [shhh] But you could start by locating a simular font and working letter by letter, over that image and just start tweeking them. But, in order to do that you'll have to rasterize the type.

The hump can be nearly produced in PS 7 with the text warp tool using the Arc Upper Style. You might have to do it in 2 swctions. The effect, I believe is Filter>>Texture>>Craquelure.
Also, you can use the Text Outline tool to make the text, select the Pen tool, right click, and convert to a work path.
Then using the pen tool, have your way with the text, make the path a selection and fill, texture to your hearts content. It`s a bit round about, but allows you to do anything you wish. (and you can save the path for reuse.)

No, they are maybe in the artistic, texture or another filter sub menu. Docilebob has maybe hit the correct one!

I guess that you mean layer styles dialog box? if they were patterns, I'd have use the term, erm... pattern.
But they might be worth exploring too! :)

I think that after using the arc transformation, the layers have been rasterized, and the letters individually rotated.
