Hi need some advice currently planning on making an NFL wallpaper. Ive been looking for inspiration and was wondering on the image below whats the best way to add another image into the graphic background giving it a faded effect like in the example below.

Any advice please thanks

Multiple layers and opacity then play with colors and size's of the different images

What Mike said + add a layer or two of various textures, logos, etc. Think about their order in the stack so that the viewer feels he is looking through the screen(s) at the things behind them.

To get the colors that Mike mentioned, put "color" and/or "photo filter" adjustment layers (locked to the layer immediately below each) between each content layer. Put the main image at the very top of the layer stack.

Google {compositing photoshop tutorial} and you'll probably get many interesting and useful hits.

Don't fear playing, flipping, resizing....make it look good to you, with all the layers, you have so many different options.
I did this with elements, so pardon the poor masks...I used all google images, resized, and transformed

Thanks Tom....it really is quick and sloppy, I may do it again with CS5 and try a bit harder.

I did this with elements.....close, but I prefer CS5 as I use my Wacom with CS and a mouse with elements

Hey CL3, sorry to be late on this post, this week at work has been murder!

I wanted to show you some ways to do these kinds of Backgrounds. They're fairly basic, mainly just multiple layers of different images and textures with different blending modes along with layer masks.

In the BG below, I started with a black filled layer and then added a large version of the LFL logo.
I placed a white lined grid over the logo and then added an Outer Glow using layer styles.
I then reduced it's opacity.
Next I added a smaller version of the LFL logo and again laid a grid on top. I set the grids blending mode to subtract. I used a layer mask (and brushes set to lower opacities) to shape the grid. I also added a B & C adjustment layer to tone it down.
Below the logos I added a new layer and placed large white circles using a big brush. I blurred these and reduced their opacity.

I had picked out three subjects I wanted in the composite. I had to remove them from their original BGs using various methods. Once done I added them to my BG document and converted them to smart objects.
The main girl went in first, I didn't do much to her. I sized and positioned her and I sharpened her a bit and used a layer mask and the gradient tool to fade her legs.
The same for Girl 2 except I added photo filter to her to lean her more towards blue. I reduced her opacity to 80%.
I sized and positioned Girl 3 and then played with the blending modes. I liked difference on her it allowed the grid to faintly show through. I added a layer mask and used another gradient to fade her right arm. I reduced her opacity to 45%.
Lastly, I added slight vignette border by filling a new layer with black, using the Rectangular Marquis tool to make a selection just inside the edges, going to SELECT > MODIFY > FEATHER and then hitting delete. I reduced it's opacity to 60%.
