need help in creating this effects.......

can any one help me to create following effects???

since it looks quite detailed especially considering lighting and aspect ratio, i would imagine this to be done in after effects as an animation, using a plugin such as trapcode.
Other than that, all i can say is that it looks like a thick oil brush stroke, made into a 3d object with a graident of blue to magenta, and then twisted
