Hi All

I'm trying to get a shadow and a thin line round a picture for placing on the web. I can do this in HTML but it makes sense and should be easier on photoshop! I can get the shadow (see image) but I need a nice white thin line around the picture. I did the shadow by just opening a new layer and making it black and moving the pic around but is there a better and more precise way?

When you know how large your pic is, you can open a new document in PS and make it a bit larger both in height and in width.

Now drag your pic on it while holding down the shift key. It will be placed in the centre on a new layer.

Now with this layer selected, click on the f (left-hand side of the icon row at the bottom of the layers palette) to open the layers effects.
Here you can choose dropshadow.

To get your outline, you can use the Stroke command at the bottom of that same layer effects dialog.

An other way (nice trick here!) would be to Ctrl/Cmd click on the layer (the icon or the layer1 or its name) and choose Edit>Stroke. Set here to white or what you fancy.
