I got this Intuos3 6x11" new in early 2006. It has served me well; I've gone from knowing nothing about art to doing great things with it, illustrating everything from comic books to video game sprites.

The downside to six years of constant use, though, is that it's beat to hell. The surface is pitted, and, more importantly, three of the onboard buttons are shot.

I keep thinking what a luxury it'd be to have all my buttons, and as I currently view the purchase of this Intuos3 in 2006 as one of my wisest investments ever, I'm thinking it'd be a good idea to invest again.

Here are the considerations. As far as functionality and feel, this 6x11 intuos3 has been perfect for me. I love it. I'd also consider that maybe I don't realize what I can't live without until I have it.

I'm mildly concerned that the newer versions don't offer the same wide screen format. More of a concern, though, is that I keep reading the 4 and 5 both have a textured surface resulting in greater concerns about wear on both the nibs and the surface. Using my i3, I never once found myself wishing for a textured surface. And if I did, I could just tape paper over top it. Even more of a concern is the nib wear rate. In 6 years, I've only seen it critical to buy new nibs once.

Other thoughts: As of this writing, the Intuos4, large, can be purchased affordably, new, from Amazon. Under $300 for the large. By comparison, the intuos5 is $330 at amazon for the medium. The i5 medium is 8.8" x 5.5". While smaller than my 6x11, it's close enough that I could live with it. The large always seems preferable, since I've never found myself longing for less surface room.

Are there other considerations when discussing the 4 vs. the 5? Or would I be even better off looking for another intuos3? Are there any particular new features I'd find myself loving?
