My Scanner Introduces Red Lines Into My Photos - Help, Anyone?

The title pretty much says it all; here's a preview shot illustrating the problem. Until last month, I'd had he scanner in a tight plastic tub for several years, and was initially surprised when it still worked at all...but if I can't fix this then I'll have no choice but to trash it. If you guys know what's causing this, feel free to let me know. thanks. :)

It appears there is a dead red sensor in your sensor array.

There may also be other issues. I assume the picture was scanned at an angle, giving the red line its slope. Otherwise, the problem may be something different from what I previously said.

The image is very low resolution and very high JPEG compression, so take the next bit of information with a grain of salt.
I pulled out the color component of the image in the first image below and the saturation component in the following image after that.

There seem to be other scan issues than just the one red line looking at the image itself. That may be in the original, yet it seems like too big of a coincidence that all those striations are in the same direction as the red line.

It may be time for a new scanner.
Just a thought.
