My reference books can't help me!

Very new and just brought myself tw books to reference but they cant help me with this one....and i think its basic...Ok. So here is my problem. When i am creating things in photoshop and i have a bunch of layers (text, pictures, symbols, whatever) and i save it, it automatically locks all the layers into one layer, so that the next time i open it, it is just one background layer. I tried unlocking that layer, but it still wont let me see or edit the other layers.


I figured out how to save it so that all the layers are there, but how do i get the layers back for all of the ones that i saved before, and have one locked layer? I have saved it as a PSD and did flatten the image. I have tried both changing it to RGB and CMYK modes.

i just knew someone would ask that ....I can just not tonight, my wifi is being installed in the morning (just moved to a new house) so I'm working on photoshop on the laptop while using the 3G on my phone to go on this forum.....screen shot tomorrow, promise and hopefully you can spare a min then to give me your expert advice. What do you think flatten image does? Don't flatten the image if you want to editable layers.

As everyone has said, if you go into layer>flatten layers, or merge the layers, you will lose them. If you are saving as a jpeg, then closing your file, you get the prompt to save. If you think you already did - save it that is because you just made a jpeg - you'll lose your layered document. Sorry if this is way too basic.

So when you are ready to save, leave all your layers as they are and save as a psd.
