Hi all

Been trying to work this out via google for about an hour and havent got any further so thought id post it here and hope someone out there can help...

I have designed a red coloured beer label in illustrator and want to put it on a photo of a beer bottle (brown) that I have taken.

normally I use multiply to do things like this to make it look more realistic, however when i put multiply on, the label practically disappears. I know this is because mulitply darkens both the images but I cant understand how to get round it.

how can i get the label to blend nicely with the bottle so it looks real??

Thanks!

by not using multiply seems to be the obvious answer here. have you tried overlay, soft light normal even I cant see why you would want it blended with the layer underneath unless it was a semi transparent label though.

Maybe it is not a layer blending mode you need for realism but maybe a layer blending style such as a tiny emposs and drop shadow etc pattern overlay using a pattern that represents paper or whatever your material is planning on being.

thanks for the reply. Yes I tried those modes too but didnt really get what i wanted. some of the label is transparent like the text

i have attached the mocked up beer label and the bottle, so yeh i want to put the graphics onto the bottle and make it look realistic. would that be using layer blending instead? thanks

Attachments

From what i can tell your not using the bottle image on the left , if the image on the right is your finish image from down loading your attachment i would make other layers as per the shine areas on the first bottle and add them to the other bottle.

sorry if im not being clear, the bottle on the left is photo of the bottle, and the other one has all been drawn in illustrator,

do you mean make a layer with the shine areas on the left bottle and put them over the illustrator bottle (in photoshop)??
thanks

Yes, transform/warp the bottle with the reflections to fit over the other. Set the blend mode to overlay and opacity to 40% or so, given the darkness of the bottle.

Then as Hoogle suggested, if you want your letters and design to appear etched into the glass, make your letters in white (probably), then set the blend mode to overlay or soft light and add a bevel and emboss. Probably the defaults will work.

I tried using your download, but it was no better than a copy/paste. Those were the steps I came up with. I hope you have this in a better size and resolution to work on for yourself.

You can try pillow emboss for a more etched into look or in the default, set the direction to down instead of up. Hard to play around with this on such a small sample.

Yes as Ibclare has already stated.. Also if you want to keep vector in illustrator, then again make new layers which will be the reflections.

Have you try import the bottle image on the left in to illy and trace it ?. make it vector.
