Hi Guys,

First post here but a long-time photoshop user. Hope you can help.

I'm trying to create the effect shown on the image below where a photograph is made up of a maze. Does anyone know how to do this?

Thanks for your help!

It looks to me as though the image of the face used threshold filter and then that maze Pattern was added on top

This particular image was not created in Photoshop.

This is the original webpage where the image came from and requires Pythonware:

http://strok.in/mazer/

Click on the links that say "my face".

Are you saying that cant be done in ps?....

NO!

But if you look at the maze, the image is made by thickening the lines of the maze...........I just have not figured out how to do it in Ps!

I suggest you make the grayscale version of your picture. Copy it. Now make a maze on a new layer, convert it to Smart Object and apply Filter->Other->Minimum to it. Paste copied grayscale version on the filter mask. Add Threshold or Levels adjustment layer above.Play around with Minimum filter parameter, adjustment layer parameters and filter mask(use Levels or Curves on the mask).

Here is some Proof of Concept to the idea:

I followed your instructions to the letter, I can't make this work.

I can't get the copied grayscale version to paste to the filter mask.

Perhaps you could show us final image with this effect applied (an actual person) and a screenshot of your layers panel.

I don't have the source image so I can't show the final image:frown:

The point is to use the Minimum filter with the grayscale mask.

I don't know why you can't paste the grayscale version to the mask. I just selected all, copied it and then pasted it on the filter mask.

This is just one way to "thicken the lines of the maze" according to the distribution of the shadows in the source image. There may be others, I don't know right now. I just posted the first thing that came off the top of my head when I got my hands on my home computer:)

May be later I will come up with something better, like stroke Layer Style or something else...
:)

Ok, thanks!

You don't need a source image, just use any photo!

I did use the Minimum filter with the grayscale mask like you instructed, didn't work. I'm obviously doing something wrong or you may have missed something in your explanation. Either way, I appreciate your help! Thanks!

What I see looking at that small sample image of the maze is just a gradient from white to silver to black?

What exactly didn't work? I posted the sample maze pattern which thickens from left to right. Did you try to replicate the same effect?

No, I want the effect to work with an actual photo, so that's what I tried.

Have been trying to do this I'll be damned if I can figure it out I've tried different layers molds filters everything I'm stumped

Getting the gradated and thickening effect on the maze is fairly simple, it's getting the lines in the maze to reflect the image through thickened lines.

We went through this before.............the effect has a name......I just can't find the thread!

If I could see the original image of that guy, it would make all the difference in the world, there is some type of balloon effect taking place within the lines, perhaps selected areas of maze have been spherized < is that a word? lol
Albeit very slight

Thanks for your help on this guys, really appreciate it. Still trying to figure it out myself.

iDad,the original image can be accessed via the link in post #3, and clicking 'me-colour.jpg' near the bottom of the page.

you can make the lines thicker by selecting the black and stroke with 1 or 2 or 3 pixels
with cutout filter ( or adjustment-layer postarize ) you can make a mask for each maze
