Monitor or laptop screen for editing

I am new to photo editing but have a 2010 Macbook Pro which I can connect to a 24 inch led monitor or use its built in screen. My question is which is best for editing? The external monitor is 1080p and the Macbook is almost certainly lower resolution if that is the overriding factor?
