Metadata information

Hi Everyone,

I hope that I can post this question here... It’s a bit of a doozy.

My wife recently “sold” a tv but was scammed by a guy using a photoshopped “proof of payment”.

Basically they sent a doctored image showing/claiming that money had been paid. It’s a little more involved but that’s the basic version.
A guy collected the tv and payment still hasn’t cleared.

Anyway, I decided to check the original sent image and load it into Photoshop. I can see certain details. He used a Mac and I can see when he edited the photo. A few other details too, but it looks like he removed a lot of information.

So my question is... what metadata might I use from the image?

There are some identifier IDs and software versions. Could this be of use to me? Perhaps Photoshop versions? I can see he used CC 7.

Hope to hear from anyone and certainly appreciate you taking the time to read this.

We’ll obviously take it up with Police too.

With thanks,
Scott

Hello and welcome to PSG.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune, but truthfully, there's not mush you can do.

A guy collected the tv and payment still hasn’t cleared.
Unfortunately, you will have to let this be a longstanding lesson to never surrender your item until you have money in your hand. Never trust any document. Check with your bank to make sure payment was received.

what metadata might I use from the image?
Unless the culprit left his name and address in the metadata, none of the information will be helpful.

There are some identifier IDs and software versions. Could this be of use to me? Perhaps Photoshop versions? I can see he used CC 7.
No. this just tells you that the culprit is one of thousands who use CC.

Again, very sorry. Hopefully the Police will have better luck tracking the culprit from their online trail.

Thank you for your quick reply. Yes, I totally agree. I said to my wife to make sure the funds have cleared before anything leaves the house. I am sadly far less trusting of people.
It’s just a mistake and is exactly as you said. A lesson!
Regards,
Scott
