Masking Help Solution

I am NOT a Photoshop whiz by any means, and am trying to learn a new skill/technique.

From time to time, I'd like to "mask out" the jet and then use a Nik HDR filter for the sky only.

How do I mask out the jet where the Nik filters will ONLY affect the sky portion of this photograph?

Please be as specific as possible in the steps I need to take, I'm a mid-level amateur when it comes to Photoshop
compared to many of you on this forum.

Thanks in advance.

Duplicate your image.
On the uppermost image, add the filter effects you want.

Once done, there should be a layer mask added to the final product layer.
If not, add a layer mask.

Use your Pen Tool to make a selection of the Dassault. The Pen Tool creates a path that is editable! Save your path!
Convert path to selection by right clicking and choosing "Make a Selection".

Click on or select the layer mask and fill with black.

Now you have masked out the Dassault and the filtered changes will only appear on the background.
