Manipulating layers

Hi everyone, I'm a newbie needing some help.
I am using a photo film scanner to scan images of postage stamps into CS5 and then using the channel splitter to produce CMYK images. On many older stamps the plate number from which the stamp was printed is engraved into the design of the stamp. In many instances a black cancellation mark obliterates the plate number. Is there anyway I can manipulate the CMYK layers to lift the black cancellation mark from the stamp image so that I can identify the stamp plate number?

I think I gat what you're getting at...

This aint no CSI.... lol... but there's no way to cancel out the black mark to reveal what's underneath.

What you have scanned is the existing pixel information wahtever it is you're looking for has been covered by the cancellation mark in the original.

Tho there may be hints of hue or pixel info that may be detected under the black, it may not be enuff to bring out the numbers you want to see.
