I'm trying to make a picture of DNA in photoshop -- just a simple gif showing the two helixes and the bases aonnecing them.

Can anyone tell me the best way to make two eaqual, mirrored, smoothly curved lines (probably about 10-20 pixels in diameter) ?

Thanks

I'm pretty new to PS, but why not create ONE side of the helix. Curves and all.

Then duplicate the layer, and on the duplicated layer, go to Edit > Transform > Flip Vertical.

Now you should just be able to move to layers with the move tool and form the double helix.

That's as much as I know, heh.

I'm sure some of the gurus can give you better advice.

Thanks for your reply. :righton:

But how do I get the curved line in the first place? How can I make the individual "curves" in the line eaqual in angle, size, and spacing?

To distort a line into a curve with similar segments, use distort>wave, and make sure to use similar minimal and max values for amplitude and wavelenght.

Don't brushes like this make you feel guilty? :bustagut:

Thanks for your help -- Now I know the easy way and the hard way!

Nah, me neither. :bustagut:

Actually I came to PS rather later in life and while I'm constantly learning how to do more within the tools of PS, I had at it to orignally to create images. I'm always been willing to experiment with any tools which will advance that goal.

Now for cheat #2, AV Bros. Page Curl plugin made this one easy.

Wow! it seems very powerful, for the small price!
You should think about doing a review of that plug!

Pierre,

I did, sort of. ;) Mostly it was an announcement with a sample.

The little doodle above was made with a thin rectangular selection maybe 20px wide X 800px long. The selection was filled on three different layers. Two were identical with a gradient (simple red to blue gradient) one had a grey gradient with a two pixel yellow inner stroke. I figured out the settings to curl the first, and selected the gray strip for the back. The second one was the same but the angle was changed 180?. They were then dragged on top of one another and a quick selection cut to a new layer at the points where they would visually cross if they were intertwined help complete the effect after it was dropped in the stacking order. The drop shadow was just a gratuitous effect.

You're right Page Curl is a very powerful plugin...fun too!

:D
