I have been trying to make a line with a gradient and for some reason seems to be a problem for me...I am trying to make a line something like this

Now the question is can I use the rectangle tool to do this or should I use the line tool? How can I add the gradient to the line. I went into the layer I made and under gradient overlay I set what wanted but looked wash out, opacity was normal.
