Or you can;
1: duplicate original layer
2: adjust black and white adjustment layer while you get satisfied
3: add curved layer and set it to multiply blend mode or adjust the darkens manually
4: add levels adjst. layer and slide the black to the right while you get satisfied ..then if you want to bring back some details simply use the mask setting to soft brush with lower opacity.

I just came back from a long vacation and this was the first post I saw and I got experimented ))
