Hi,

could anyone explain what value the magic wand uses to make its selection?

I believe it is luminance but after testing I am now not so sure.

thank you

The Magic Wand tool looks for differences in color and contrast, more or less similar in value to those first sampled, depending upon the various parameters you set for the tool. From what I've read and understand, the tool selects pixels based on their luminosity values within the individual color channels that make up the composite image it samples. This is the limit of my working knowledge of this tool.

Aside from this, I suspect you may have to get into contact with someone from Adobe who's on the Photoshop team who has a more technical explanation for you.

I'm somewhat curious as to why you want to know this and, more so, why would it matter?

Sorry I could not be of more help. Good luck!

Hi IamSam

I would like to know because the behaviour I expected did not happen.

I have an 8-bit RGB doc and I set up two colours.

RGB 255,0,0 and RBG 245,0,0. Their luminosity values are 76 and 73 respectively. This value was taken from the histogram and verified via blend-if. The value is from all 3 channels but as I have set the Blue and Green to 0 then it makes life easier.

Using blend if I can use a the slider to drop out a colour based on the value. So if I get to 74 then one colour drops out and if I get to 77 the other drops out. This shows that Ps is using the value as I would have expected.

If I now go to the magic wand and enter a tolerance of 4 I should select both of the colours but it does not. Instead I have to get to a tolerance of 10 before both colours are selected. I would like to know why this is to understand why the wand tool is behaving differently than other elements of Ps.

Its a small thing but it is driving me mad :)

thanks again for the reply
